Little smile

Mom tried in vain to capture Maya's little smile the other day. Since she refuses to perform for the camera, this is the best of the bunch. Hopefully in another few weeks she'll be a smiling pro.

Cuteness aside, Maya's fussiness has reached a new peak. Hopefully it eases up, otherwise we're trading her in for a new model.

I don't know it's it the motion or colors or the fact that our tv is 35663432 inches wide, but Maya really likes watching television. Wonder where she gets that from?

Knock on wood, but she's also started taking some better naps during the day. This nap lasted over 3 hours!! (And yes, we do love her just a tiny bit more when she's sleeping):




Nights are also still going well. After her bath, and a quick meal and some cuddles she's ready for bed, usually only waking twice between 8pm and 7am. We know that the laws of the universe state that discussing your baby's good sleep habits will cause the baby to rebel and go back to waking up every hour, but we'll take that chance.

We went to visit family on Saturday in Albany. Our first long road trip! Maya did well on the drive up, except for some screaming the last few minutes (she was DONE being in the car). Most of the day she was fine, especially since she had so many people to hold her. She had her random fussiness for no reason, as per usual, and wailed for 30 minutes during the drive home. However, she slept really well that night -- she must've been tuckered out from all the activity.

6 weeks

At 6 weeks, Maya is beginning to make noises other than crying and whining, which is nice. She really likes the light-up star on the top of her activity mat. She'll sit and stare at that for a good 10 minutes in the morning so mom can get breakfast. She naps about 4-5 hours a day, with about 10 hours of sleep at night, usually with only 2 - 3 wake ups to eat. She wants to smile but hasn't quite gotten the hang of it. She's starting to like her nightly bath now, as long as she doesn't get water poured over her head.

Good sleep

Good sleep is hard to come by when you have a month old baby. Thankfully Maya has given us a few good nights with a 5-hour stretch of sleep. Fingers crossed naptime comes easier to her now!

5 weeks

During Maya's 5th week she had her one month checkup. 9lbs 8oz, 22 1/4 inches long. Head 14 3/4 inches around. The doctor said she showed great eye contact for her age.

Maya's fussiness from the thrush hit a peak on Friday afternoon, when she spit up a huge volume after screaming hysterically. Mom was worried and called the doctor's office, so we went in. The doctor said we could take her off the Nystatin, which seemed to be upsetting her tummy. The lovely nurse told me that we weren't supposed to let her swallow it. Um, excuse me??? Would've been nice if we'd been told that when we got the prescription!

Thankfully, Maya seemed to feel better immediately after discontinuing the Nystatin. We had a fun weekend with local Grandma, who took us to Babies R Us and Costco on Saturday. Then on Sunday Uncle Chad from Maine came to visit!

She is starting to like her activity mat and will hang out there sometimes during her alert periods of the day. She's also starting to do well with her swing, which occasionally puts her to sleep. She still hates bathtime, but we will be using it as a nighttime/sleep routine for her, so we hope that she starts to enjoy it and finds it soothing soon!

4 weeks

At 4 weeks, Maya and mom began being treated for thrush. Maya wasn't showing any signs that her mouth hurt her, but her tongue looked white. Nursing definitely hurt mom, so both were put on anti-fungals. Grandma and aunt Mary came to visit and help out while dad was in Chicago for uncle Jeff's wedding. We got out, went to the mall and had dinner. It was a fun girl's weekend! Unfortunately, the day after starting the thrush treatment, Maya's fussiness hit a new level! Poor kid!

Hanging with Maya -- 3 weeks

Being home with Maya is interesting. She seems to have trouble napping -- falling and staying asleep. At 3 weeks we introduced the bottle and the pacifier, both of which she is taking to. Dad has been able to help out with some feedings at night while mom gets some rest. She eats frequently during the day -- usually every hour and a half or so, but she rarely nurses longer than 5 minutes at a time, even at night. She's able to go every 2-3 hours at night and has started having some fussy episodes, keeping everyone in the house awake for many hours! We're unsure if it's gas or if she's just overtired and can't figure out how to sleep. Poor kid. These episodes happen about twice a week at this point. She also hates bathtime, getting her clothes changed, her bouncy seat, and being in the car seat. She's a sensitive little girl! She has a strong startle reflex -- sometimes all it takes is daddy blowing his nose to set her off into a crying fit, from which she is easily soothed. She also still loves to be swaddled. It really helps her calm down and sleep better.
